Meteoalarm.eu
- to everyone interested in European weather

On Meteoalarm websites www.meteoalarm.eu, weather symbols and colour-coded maps of Europe show at a glance where the weather might be, or soon become, dangerous. The website has been developed by EUMETNET, the Network of European Meteorological Services. Finnish Meteorological Institute provides information to Meteoalarm for Finland.

The danger of a weather phenomenon and its impacts to society are described by four colour-coded awareness levels.

The awareness level is green when no particular weather awareness is needed over land.
The awareness level is yellow when the weather is potentially dangerous. The weather phenomena that have been forecast are not unusual, but be attentive if you intend to perform activities that may expose you to meteorological risks. Keep informed about the expected meteorological conditions and do not take any avoidable risk.
The orange awareness level means that the weather is dangerous. Unusual meteorological phenomena have been forecast. Damage and casualties are likely to happen. Be very vigilant and keep regularly informed about the detailed expected meteorological conditions. Be aware of the risks that might be unavoidable. Follow any advice given by your authorities.
The red awareness level means that the weather is very dangerous. Exceptionally intense meteorological phenomena have been forecast. Major damage and accidents are likely, in many cases with threat to life and limb, over a wide area. Keep frequently informed about expected meteorological conditions and risks. Follow orders and any advice given by your authorities under all circumstances. Be prepared for extraordinary measures.

The colour coding has been chosen so that they are as consistent as possible within the whole Europe. Weather symbols illustrate the type of severe weather.

Awareness information for Finland

The colours of the official weather warning map of Finnish Meteorological Institute are not consistent with the colour coded Meteoalarm awareness levels.

Weather parameters included in Meteoalarm differ from country to country. Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) issues awareness levels for forest fires, thunderstorms, snow/ice, and winds over land.

Meteoalarm forecast period in Finland

Weather warnings in Finland are valid 24 hours. For example, a forecast issued today at 1 pm is valid until tomorrow 1 pm. The Meteoalarm forecast for Finland doesn't include the whole next day. The colour codes depict the highest awareness levels for each weather phenomena during the next 24 hours. The colour codes are the same for both days. In several other European countries, the awareness levels are issued separately for two days.
