Data dissemination policy and instructions

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) provides weather data as requested. Nearly all the data from surface weather stations is in our database since 1959. Older observation sheets are stored in the central archives of the FMI. Part of the older data is stored on microfilms and microfiches.

If you are planning on ordering data, please consider first, which areas in Finland are of your interest and take a look at our station lists in that area. Also, it would be helpful to think in advance which are the observed parameters you are looking for. Give a thought also whether you need information on, for instance, measurements made 3 hour intervals or daily values (at 12 or 24 hours).

Additionally we have daily averages, monthly values, precipitation sums etc. Many of the climatological parameters and frequency distributions have been published. These may be requested from our library. Also most scientific university libraries have meteorological publications.

Pricing

Weather data is priced in accordance with the purpose of use and the content of the data submitted to a user. The purpose of use is divided to commercial and as regulated by international contracts to research and teaching purposes.

Data delivered solely for research and teaching purposes requires an agreement, which defines the use of the data. Compensation fee for this service is based on the amount of work time used and on the law of grounds for payment. In this case, the use of the data is restricted only to the use defined in the mutual agreement.

Contact

We will answer questions you may have on weather data and statistics, but greatly appreciate if you have in advance given thought about what your needs are (e.g. observed parameters, time period, requested time resolution of measurements), and taken a look at our list of stations available.

On working days we offer our telephone service:
