Air quality monitoring
Finnish Meteorological Institute is responsible for the national background air quality monitoring. Our monitoring network consists of about twenty measurement stations in different parts of the country. Most of our measurements are part of the international monitoring and research programmes.

The background air quality monitoring started in the beginning of the 1970's. The longest time series from those days include sulphur dioxide and major ions in precipitation. Nowadays our monitoring measurements include a variety of sulphur and nitrogen compounds, ozone, volatile organic compounds and heavy metals. Quality assurance procedures are an essential part of our monitoring routines.

The air quality monitoring results are available in real time in the national air quality portal www.ilmanlaatu.fi.
