Air quality research

Airborne pollutants have been monitored by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) since the early 1970's. Models have been developed to simulate the transport, dispersion and deposition of these pollutants.

The research on air quality is in accordance with the main research topic areas at the FMI. Research activities are mainly under the headings Atmospheric Modelling and Global Change:

Atmospheric Modelling/Air Pollution Dispersion Modelling
  • urban scale models
  • regional models
  • models for hazardous substances
Global Change/Air Chemistry
  • greenhouse gases and carbon cycling
  • atmospheric aerosols
  • tropospheric ozone
In addition to the above research topic areas, Air Quality Assessment and Monitoring is a priority research area at the FMI.

We also provide Air Quality Services.
