Observation Services

Observation Services unit belongs to Weather and Safety division of the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Operational weather forecasts, environmental and atmospheric studies, safety and warning services all have an important role in society. None of these can be studied or applied without proper knowledge of weather conditions. Further, weather observations themselves are necessary indicators in weather-sensitive decision making. Observations are used by e.g. air traffic, maritime operations, tourism, agriculture, forestry, energy production, maintenance services, and private citizens. All activities of the Observation Services are directed towards meeting the requirements of these purposes. Among other activities, Jokioinen observatory is part of the Observation Services unit.

Almost 500 weather observation sites are maintained both for national and international needs. Observation methods include manual and automated surface weather stations, upper-air radio soundings, satellites, a radar network, a lightning locating system, and other more specialised measurements.

Observations are transferred in almost real time from the observation stations to the Institute's data base. The data are then combined with other related information and further used by meteorologists and researchers.
