Weather phenomena and air pollutants do not recognise national boarders and so international co-operation is a natural and essential part in the operation of the FMI.

The Nordic co-operation in meteorology has a long history and an important role in the development of weather services. After Finland became a member of the European Union, the co-operation in the European level has increased rapidly. The FMI takes an active part in European research and development programmes.
